Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club
Veterans competition
One of the more prestigious events relating to Grafton’s Veteran golfers was held last week, that being the Pat Henry and Jim Fleming Memorial Day in which 75 Veterans turned up to honour and remember two great members, who in the past contributed greatly to the history of Grafton Golf Club. The eventual winner of this important competition was Peter Tziavaras (20) who put together a impressive round to record 41 points, 23 around the front 9, consolidating that effort with a further 18 around the back. Just missing out for the major trophy was Don Skarratt (26) just the single point in arrears to Peter with a front 9 score of 21, followed by 19 around the back for a 18 hole total of 40. Next in line for recognition ins the Veterans competition was David Page (16) who completed his round with 39 which included a more than impressive 24 on the front 9. There was not a specified ball rundown on this occasion with the organisors of the competition awarding a ball to each and every veteran golfer who turned up on the day to honour two special past members in Jim and Pat. Whilst on the subject of Veterans golf there are just a couple more opportunities remaining to qualify for the Veteran Coopers Brewery Top gun shootout with the final round scheduled for Tuesday 19th September. A complete list of those players who currently qualify for the final is available in the Club house. The final itself will be held on Sunday 8th October.
The results of the members competition which was held in conjunction with the Veterans division were identical with Peter Tziavaras, Don Skarrett and David Page taking out the top three places. Pro balls for the member competition which had 87 competitors went down to 34 on a countback.
Weekend competition
Just under 110 players contested last Saturday’s Ulmarra Hotel sponsored Monthly Mug which as always played as a stroke competition. No doubt local knowledge could have been a factor in the win by David Wilks (18) who was awarded the September mug due to his leading score of 68 nett. There is no actual record of past mug winners over the years, but it would be surprising if this was the first mug win recorded by young” David who has been a very consistent and competent golfer over the time. Tow players, Brad Neich (21) and Rowan Butcher (9) finished one shot in arrears to David for which Rowan took out Á’ grade and Brad picking up the win in Ç’ grade, both players recording a score of 69 nett. Runner-up in Á’ grade was Kingsley Smith (10) on 70 with Andrew Sear (20) also on 70 claiming the runner-up spot in Ç’ grade. Allan Donaghey (14) was the winner of ‘B’ grade with 70 from Tim Gooley (14) with a 72. For those who are interested in such things, there were 30 starters in Á’ grade, 26 in ‘B’ grade and with the remaining 53 starter in ç’ grade.
There was some hot competition in the various nearest the pin holes, Jason Casserly (10) a morning player, held the Pro pin honour on the 1st for much of the day, until Bob Turns (16) came along and knocked him over with a tee shot that finished 192cm from the cup to claim the prize. Andrew Sear added to his grade trophy by taking out the 6th 282cm, Derek Latimer (15) was awarded the prize on the 10th 217cm. Greg Robertson (12) was the nearest of all the nearest the pin holes with his effort on the 17th finishing just 90cm away. Pro balls going down to 75 on a countback.
Thursday competition
Last weeks Thursday competition was supported by 56 starters in which we find Mark Hackett (10) a very worthy winner with 41 points against his name. Denis Runge (16) who represents the Maclean Golf Club continues his campaign of featuring in the Grafton results by claiming the 1st runner-up with 39 after surviving a countback from Gary Pym (24) and Dean Sing (13), Gary eventually recognized as the 2nd runner-up. Dean having to just settle for a pro ball for his effort. All other on 34 or better went home with t pro ball.
Coming events
Next Saturday the event will be a single Stableford with Naeco Blue Seafoods providing the trophies. That will be followed on Sunday with the Rotary Promoted Par 3 Championships.
