Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club -10th July 2023
Weekend Competition.
There is no doubt Grafton golfers know how to support the various memorial days held throughout their yearly golf programme. That was again highlighted last Saturday at which time the Don Bellamy Memorial day was held. The competition sponsored by the Bellamy family, Wendy, Jon and Mark, attracted a healthy field of just under 120 starters. The scoring in the 4Ball Aggregate was of a very high standard with teams having to record a score of 43 points or better to secure a pro ball for their efforts.
Coming home with an aggregate score of 50 points the pairing of Brendon Cleaver (6) and Dylan Cleaver (33) absolutely smashed the competition field, signing off with a more than outstanding score, three points clear of their nearest rivals. The Cleaver combination might have easily won the day, however it was reasonably costly handicap wise for Dylan Cleaver with his handicap severely reduced from 33 to 18 as a reward for his outstanding contribution to the teams result with 46 individual points, as calculated by organisers of the competition. With a score of 47 the team of Dek Pabian (25) and Trevor Lascelles (16) were awarded the 1st runner-up spot. Their score no doubt enhanced by a hole-in-one on the 17th by Dek, which yielded them a very handy five points towards their final score. The popular and long-time combination of Terry Barnes (29) and Tony Miller (16) were appropriately awarded with the 2nd runner-up spot with a great score of 45, 25 of those points recorded on the back 9 which gave them the upper hand in the countback with the team of Brock Dewberry (12) and Mitch Rose (17) who also finished their round with 45.
In the nearest the pin department of the event all the interest on the 17th was diminished by Dek Pabian’s hole in one, however there were some very close efforts on the remaining nearest the pin holes. On the 10th, Andrew Sear (22) knocked it close just 55cm away. On the 6th Kris O’Neill (+1) proved his class finishing just 96cm from the cup. Ian Langley (9) proved he was no slouch claiming the Pro pin on the 1st with his tee shot rolling close to the pin, just 130cm away, knocking Shane Essex out of the calculation by the very small margin of 2cm.
For those current golfers who did not know Don Bellamy personally, he was one of our Club’s more colourful characters and a great supporter of Grafton Golf for many years. Our thanks to the Bellamy family for allowing us to remember Don in this fashion and continuing their association with Grafton Golf Club.
