Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club
Mid Week Competition
Not only are the weekend fields relating to Grafton Golf Club remain strong, our mid-week competitions also draw a good number of golfers in both our Tuesday and Thursday competition. The Tuesday competitions in particular, which incorporates not only a members competition, but also includes a Veterans Medley competition in conjunction. It is not unusual for the results in both competitions to be identical at the top of the leader boards for both competitions. That was not the case in last Tuesday’s competitions, however one golfer did achieve a win in both competitions with the 1st and 2nd runner-up positions being shared by a number of players.
The Veterans component of the competition (52 players) was taken out by Doug Clark (23) who recorded a score of 40 points for an easy win establishing a four point margin over this nearest competition. Two players, Paul Starr (17) and David Morgan (13) completed their rounds with 36 to be awarded with the 1st and 2nd runner-up spots respectively. Pro balls for the Vets going down to 33 point. Not only was Doug Clark’s score of 40 good enough to take out the Veterans competition, but also the member competition, which attracted a field of 65 starters. However the winning margin was reduced to just two points with both John Martin (13) and Tony Gallagher (7) completing their 18 hole journey with 38 to be awarded with the 1st and 2nd runner-up positions respectively. Pro balls in the members competition going down to all those good players on 33.
The Thursday competition was also strongly supported with 51 players taking on the 18 hole challenge, which included visiting players from Sanctury Cove, Wee Waa and Maclean. No doubt encouraged by some friendly family competition, Trevor Townsend (14) got the cash with a score of 40 points. Mick Carter (8) put in a strong effort to trail Trevor by just two points to record a 38 score just the single point clear of Peter Johnson (8) who was awarded the 2nd runner-up spot for that effort. Pro balls going to players with 34 or better.
Weekend Competition
Despite being a holiday weekend a good field of just over 100 starters contested the Saturday competition which was a 18 hole single Stableford that attracted several visitors from Dubbo and Casino as well as Wee Waa and Sanctury Cove. The overall winner on the day was young Scotty Brown (6) who finished up with 41 points to easily claim the winner’s trophy. Kevin Vaughan (33) who also featured in the previous Saturday results claimed the win the ‘C’ grade with second best score on the day 38 points. Also with 38 was Shane Essex (11) who was named as the winner in ‘B’ grade for that effort. Runner-up in ‘C’ grade was Trevor Walters (37) with 37 and in ‘B’ grade the runner-up spot went to Ken Radunz (16) also with 37. The feature players in ‘A’ grade were David Green (8) with 36 from Glenn Gardner (11) with 36. Graham Tracey (9) claimed the Pro pin on the 1st and if you had 32 points or better you secured yourself a pro ball.
Clayden Shield
Last Tuesday a strong contingent of 20 Grafton Veterans travelled up to Glen Innes to contest the annual Clayden Shield in which five different Clubs are represented. In the end Tenterfield was the winning Club on the day in which Grafton ran third in the 5 Club competition. The star players for Grafton were Darren Hindom with 38 points and Norm Burt on 36. Neil & Judy Clayden have been sponsoring this particular inter-club competition it seems forever and their continued association with this event is more than appreciated by all players and Clubs involved in this prestigious competition.
Note: Ambrose Knockout
Those players who are involved with the Grafton Glass 2 man Ambrose knockout are reminded that all first round matches are to be completed no later than 19th April Those teams that fail to comply with the cut-off date could face the possibility of having to forfeit. At this time the combination of Peter Sinclair and Paul Danvers have progressed to the 2nd round of the series when they defeated Steven Camac and Scott Brown 4 and 3.
