Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club - 6th March

Weekend Golf

One of the biggest monthly mug fields for some time contested last Saturday’s A. Fletcher & Associates event in which 129 starters tee it up with all three grades reasonably equal in numbers. ‘A’ grade attracting 41 starters, ‘B’ grade 45 and ‘C’ grade 43. At the conclusion of play it was Andrew Sear (25) who was the overall and mug winner with a good score of 67 nett, three shots clear of his nearest rivals. Tony Miller (26), Chris Payne (28), John Hancock (23) and Jason Casserly (9) who all finished on 70. For all their efforts Tony and Chris were awarded with the win and runner-up spots in ‘C’ grade, Jason was recognised as the ‘A’ grade winner with John having to settle with just a pro ball after being on the wrong side of the countback process against Tony and Chris. In ‘B’ grade, Damian Blair (15) took the top spot with a nett 71 from Peter Gibbons (12) who survived a countback over Paul Danvers (12) to claim the runner-up spot. Runner-up to Jason Casserly in ‘A’ grade was Jeff Hackett (5) with a score of 71. Jordan Weller (12) was the winner of the Pro pin on the 1st his tee shot just under a metre from the cup. Tony Miller put a great shot into the 6th to claim the trophy for that hole finishing just 129cm from the pin. On the 10th it was Kingsley Smith (9) who claimed the prize putting his ball a mere 59cm away. Bill Dudgeon (15) being awarded with the prize on the 17th his tee shot finishing 112cm away. To claim a pro ball you needed to complete your round with a score of 75 or better.

Weekday Golf

On the previous Tuesday there was 86 starters in the members competition with just the one point separating the top three players with a score of 39 points. Billy Newman (22) returned to form with 39 from Karl Studd (17) and Jeff Hackett (5) who both finished on 38.

Veteran’s

In the Veteran’s Medley competition held in conjunction with the members, a total of 79 starters took up the challenge in which Billy Newman prevailed to win with 39 from Jeff Hackett on 38 followed by Ray Evans (21) with a very well-constructed 37 points. Pro balls going down to players with 30 or better. Whilst on the subject of Veteran golf their annual Top Gun Shootout competition is under way with early qualifying rounds now completed. At this time the top qualifying positions are led by Sam Davison with 42 from Peter Brennan on 41. They are followed by three players with 40, Darren Hindon, Peter Smyth and Peter Rouse. Next best on 39 are Geoff Crispin, Dek Pabian and Bill Newman, with Luke Visage, Glen Gardner and Gerry McMullen all on 38 currently making the cut. Still plenty of time left to qualify for the Coopers Brewery Top Gun Shootout with the final qualifying round scheduled for Tuesday 19th September.

Coming Events Next Saturday the men’s competition will be 18 hole Texas Scramble. This 4 man teams competition being sponsored by O’Donohue, Hanna & Associates. In conjunction with the main event will be a 18 hole single Stableford. On the Saturday following (18th March), there will be another 4 man teams event, this time the competition will be 18 hole Irish 4 Ball, sponsored by McMullan Contracting. It would be a good idea to nominate your teams for this event sooner rather than later as a near capacity field is anticipated.

That event will be followed on Sunday 19th March with a mixed event. There is a slight change to the competition format which is indicated in the official programme book. The competition will now be a Texas Scramble which will commence with a shotgun start at 11am. For further details relating to this particular competition contact Club Captain, David Morgan.

Note

Not all that long to go for the 2023 Men’s Club & Grade Championships, sponsored by Greg Harvison Building and Design and Jacaranda City Coaches (David and Leanne Morgan). The first round of the Championships scheduled for Saturday 22nd April. The Saturday component of the series will incorporate round one of the Clarence Valley Rural & Industrial Supplies Winter Consistency Trophy. Round one of the Championships receiving the support of Grafton Motor Group. The 2nd & 3rd & 4th rounds of the Championship series to be held on Sunday 23rd April and 29th & 30th April.
