Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club
Mid Week Golf
Plenty of golf action over the past few weeks, with the 2021 Club & Grade Championships as well as the May Monthly Mug. The regular mid-week competitions fields held up despite the very busy weekend events. In the Tuesday members/veterans competition held on 2nd May a total of 87 golfers made up the field with scores very close at the top of both competitions. Just the single point separated the top four players in the members event in which a visiting Yamba golfer, John Martin (13) , taking out the competitions with 39 points. Three players Ron Sommer (21), Nick Abrahall (19) and John Tracey (12) all finishing just the single point in arrears on 38 with Ron and Nick awarded the 1st and 2nd runner-up spots respectively. John had to be content with just a pro ball for his effort. The results in the Veterans component of the days play were almost identical to the members results with Ron Sommer, Nick Abrahall and John Tracey claiming the top three spots respectively with all three finishing with 38. Pro balls went down to 31 in both competitions on a countback.
Results in the Thursday competition held on 4th May were a little more clear with Daniel Blackman (7) a undisputed winner with an outstanding 41 points, five points clear of his nearest rival, Ron Phillips (17) with 37. Next best following a countback was Safety Beach visitor, Michael Johnson (14) with 35 from Gary Pym (21) and Noel Allen (21). Pro balls going down to those with 32 or better.
Weekend Competition
Last Saturday’s Daniel Usher Electrical May Monthly Mug attracted a very strong field of 107 starters from which a visiting golfer from Pelican Waters, Nathan James (21) posted the best score on the day with 65 nett. However being a visitor was ineligible to claim the Mug, that honour going to Andrew Sear (23) who was also awarded the win in ‘C’ grade from Michael Corfe (20) who completed his round with 69 nett. For many years the Dahl name, especially Jean Dahl dominated Grafton Golf, winning countless individual Club Championships and district titles, together with Billy Dahl who was never all that far from the action during those times. Now another Dahl, this time John (10) has featured in the results taking out the ‘A’ grade division with a score of 69 nett, Jeff Hackett (5) claimed the runner-up spot with a 70, no doubt his score enhanced with two nearest the pin awards on the 10th and 17th holes. Trevor White (13) put in a decent round to take out the ‘B’ grade division with a score of 70 over John Tracey (12) with 71. Dwayne Doyle (7) captured the Pro Pin on the 1st, with the remaining nearest the pin award going to Chris Gannon (38) on the 6th. Pro balls going down to those on 75 on a countback.
Coming Events
Next Tuesday, for the Veterans the 2nd round of their 2023 Championships will be held which is played under the stroke golf format. The 1st round held earlier this week. On Saturday the competition will take the form of Ambrose golf, the event being the Johnno & Dianne Johnson Memorial day, sponsored as always by long-time family friend of the Johnson’s, Bruce Wotton. The feature playing condition of this 4 man team Ambrose competition is that each team member must contribute a drive on a par 3,4, & 5 holes and be recorded appropriately on your score card.
