Putts 'n' Pars - 5th June 2023

Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Weekend & Midweek Competitions

One of the biggest Monthly Mug fields for many years fronted up last Saturday in the Craig Woods Plumbing sponsored event, with 141 starters taking on the challenge. No doubt enhanced with 28 visiting golfers from several Queensland Clubs as well as various other Clarence Valley Clubs. With such a large field it would be a difficult competition to win, however that did not deter Aaron Macfadyen (18) who successfully negotiated the 18 holes to finish with a score of 64 nett, establishing a three shot buffer to his nearest competitor, John Tracey (12) with 67. John’s score more than good enough to claim the win in ‘B’ grade fairly easily from Trevor Townsend (18) who completed his 18 holes on 71. Scores in ‘A’ grade were very tight at the top of that grade with both David Green (9) and Graham Tracey (10) both completing their rounds with 68 nett and that was the order they finished in at the completion of the countback process. As a bonus Graham also picked up the Pro pin on the 1st with his tee shot finishing just 66cm from the cup. A countback was also required to sort out ‘C’ grade with Karl Studd (17) and Terrence Ord (18) joint leaders in that grade finishing with 70. It was a big week for Karl, as he absolutely smashed the field in Thursday’s competition winning that competition by 8 Stableford points over his nearest rival with a more than outstanding score of 48 points, which would normally be a good score in a fourball event.

Saturday’s nearest the pin awards went to Graham Tracey as mentioned earlier on the 1st, Sam Herd (18) on the 6th, the 10th went to Ron Phillips (17) with Ralf Zaffino (15) just 75cm from the pin on the 17th. In the proball department 11 players finished with 75 from which just three received a ball for that effort, with those players better than 75 also qualifying for one.

The Thursday competition attracted a field of 60 starters in which Karl Studd was the obvious star with his 48 points as recognised earlier from John Martin (11), a Yamba visitor and Aaron Macfadyen (19) both on 40. Aaron’s score a strong indication on what he was able to achieve in Saturday’s mug event. Pro balls going down to all those on 34 or better.

The Tuesday competition also received strong support with 104 starters in the combined members/veterans event. In the members and veteran divisions Glenn Gardner (12) was the winner with 40 from Dougie Hughes (13) on 38. The 2nd runner-up winner was Jason Casserly (6) in the members competition and Peter Rouse (12) in the veterans. Pro balls going down to 31 on a countback in the members and 30 also on a countback in the veteran competition.

Winter Consistency Trophy

The 2nd round of the four round series of the Clarence Valley Rural and Industrial Supplies 2023 Winter Consistency trophy was held in conjunction with Saturday’s Monthly Mug competition. At the halfway point of the series, Tony Blackadder (3) leads the overall with rounds of 40 and 39 against his name. Six points in arrears to Tony is Damien Blair (14) on 73. The leading two players are followed by Terrence Ord (18) and Graham Tracey (10) both on 72, from Greg Harvison (1) and Tony Miller (25) who currently sit with 69. The final two rounds of this particular series are scheduled for 22nd July and 19th August, plenty of opportunity for the leaders to improve their current positions and the remaining players to catch them.

Veteran’s Top Gun Shootout

The Veteran golfers top gun shootout is currently at an interesting position with just two points separating the top 10 contenders in the series. Leading with 42 at this time are Sam Davison and Scotty Scott followed by Peter Brennan and Michael Beehag with 41. The remaining six contenders and 1st reserve are all on 40 and are on the cusp of relegation should someone post a better score. In order they are Darren Hindom, Peter Smyth, Peter Rouse, Gary Pym, Dough Clark, Ray Evans and Glen Gardner. Still plenty of time remains in the series to improve your position in the competition with the final qualifying round scheduled for Tuesday 19th September. This particular series sponsored by Coopers Brewery.
