Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club
Weekend Competition
Plenty of golf action last weekend with two Jacaranda themed events held in both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday the men’s Jacaranda 4BBB Holiday Coast Meats Stableford was conducted, which attracted a strong field of 128 starters. No-one could get near the eventual winners of the event, Dean Hayes (20) and Bob Turns (17), this powerful combination accumulating a massive score of 51 points to easily win the event. For the record they recorded 26 points around the front nine and backed that up with 25 around the back nine. The strength of the pairing was obviously Dean’s who contributed scores on 14 of the scoring holes with Bob making his important effort count on the remaining four with three 3-point holes together with a couple of 2 point holes. No doubt the handicap system will have some impact on Dean’s future handicap. The runner-up position was achieved by the pairing of Gary Pym (22) and David Green (9) who completed their round with 45, the scoring of both players evenly spread with both players contributing scores on nine holes each. However, to claim the runner-up Gary and David had to survive the countback process with the combination of Matthew Worthing (3) and Paul Harvison (6) also scoring 45, but they had to settle for the 2nd runner-up spot, being on the wrong side of the countback. In the nearest the pin component of the competition, Derek Latimer (13) won the Pro pin on the 1st. John Taylor (10) the 6th, Dek Pabian (18) the 10th with the Clubs most prolific nearest the pin winner, Tim Bartlett (2), picking up the award on the 17th. Pro balls went down to pairings with 43 or better in which the combination of Craig Woods (10) and Chris Lambeth (30) were the last in the pro-ball ranks to receive a ball each with that score.
On Sunday the Jacaranda Mixed 4BBB Stableford was held, which was very competitive with just two points separating the leading three pairings. Jake Lambeth (22) and Cheryl Shanley (20) finished the day with 49 points, recording a strong 26 around the front 9, supporting that effort with a further 23 around the back. With a score of 48 Bob (35) and Di (29) Chapman were awarded the runner-up spot from Trevor (17) and Narelle (34) Lascelles picking up the 2nd runner-up trophy with 47. The nearest the pin awards went to Heather Purtill (8) on the 1st, Gordon Shand (14) on the 6th, Kaye Murdoch (10) on the 10th and Bob Turns (17) added a further trophy to his weekend haul by claijing the trophy on the 17th. Pro balls from the 40 starters went down to those with 42 or better.
Mid-Week Competition
A total of 85 players made up the field on Tuesday with the results identical in both the members and veteran divisions. With a score of 44 points Bob Mawhinney (25) was the star of both divisions. Bob was followed by Brad Mostyn (14) 42 with Graeme Rickwood (24) racing away with 40 to claim the 2nd runner-up spot. Pro balls went down to 35 in the members and 31 on a countback in the veterans.
A visitor from Horizons Golf Club, Anthony Ryan (9) won the Thursday competition with 41 points from Peter Smyth (29) with 40. Don Skarratt (23) claimed the 2nd runner-up spot the hard way having to survive a countback from Neville Gilbert (21) with both players recording 39. Pro balls going down to 33 on a countback.
