Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club
Weekend Golf
Despite the threat of rain and the possibility of some unpleasant playing conditions a good field of 120 players contested the O’Donohue Hanna & Associates Texas Scramble, hosted by Grafton Golf Club last Saturday. It was a rather decisive victory for the team of Jason Caserly (9), Simon Loadsman (5), Troy Henwood (14) and Andrew J. Fletcher (18) who accumulated a combined total of 141 points for the 18 holes. No doubt their score was enhanced by the efforts of Andrew J. Fletcher who put together the best individual score from the 120 players to record a score of 48 points for which he received a bonus prize as an appropriate reward. As a team they recorded 70 points around the front 9 and backed that up with 71 on the back. In 2nd place with a team score of 137 was the combination of Daniel Usher (18), Andrew Loy (11), Robert Bell (17) and Brenton Blanch (27). This team matched the winning combination with 70 around the front, however fell away a little around the back with 67. Just the single point separated the 1st and 2nd Runner-up spots with Tim Gooley (14), Troy McLaren (25), John Holmes (20) and Allan Donaghey (15) putting together a group score of 136.
There was some accuracy on display in regard to the nearest the pin component of the days competition. On the 1st Matt Davidson (18) was just 80cm away, Craig Langford (4) was under a metre off target on the 6th, on the 17th Simon Loadsman (5) got the cash. Kingsley Smith (10) seems to have a mortgage on the 10th with his tee shot this week finishing just 15cm from the cup. That improved on his effort the previous Saturday at which time he won the same prize, however his tee shot at that time was 57cm away. It will be interesting to see how he handles his nearest the pin shot next time he plays the 10th hole. To score a Pro ball you required a team score of at least 128 points to qualify.
Weekday Golf
With the lifting of the preferred lies , playing conditions, scores in the midweek competitions have remained reasonably strong. The members Tuesday competition attracted 83 starters with the winning score being achieved by Ben Randell (12) with 40 points. He was followed by Jackson Wright (1) on 39 with the evergreen Cyril Coombes (24) claiming the 2nd runner-up spot with 37 on a countback from Nick Abrahall (19).. Pro balls going down to 32 or better.
The Grafton Veteran’s Medley competition on the same day, 70 players took up the challenge with the results very similar to the main competition. In this competition it was Cyril Coombes (24) who achieved top spot with his 37 from Nick Abrahall (19) also with 37. The 2nd runner-up spot went to another great supporter of Veteran golf, Gary Bondfield (19) with 36. Pro balls going down to those on 31.
The Thursday competition attracted 54 players with Michael Gane (10) an easy winner recording 41 points, 3 clear of runner-up, Steve Houlahan (10) on 38. Next in line was Matt Katon (11) with 37 on a countback from two other golfers. Pro balls distributed to those with 33 or better.
