Putts & Pars

Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Week-end Golf

There is no doubting the popularity of Ambrose golf when hosted by Grafton Golf Club, that was made very clear last Saturday in the Stihl Shop/Georges Tree Service competition in which there were over 130 plus starters. With a more than outstanding score of 60 gross, which equates to 55.875 nett, the combination of Jason Casserly (8), Simon Loadsman (8), Troy Henwood (14) and Rohan Hackett (2) were unbeatable on the day. A quick check of their card reveals a blemish free effort with 9 birdies, 1 eagle and the rest all pars to easily claim victory. Another well-constructed team comprising of David Morgan (13), Greg Harvison (1) and a couple of visitors James Kelly (8) and Mark Reid (34) representing the Social Golf Club of Australia, combined really well to claim the 1st runner-up position with a net score of 57. This team also had a blemish free round their gross score of 64 made up by 6 birdies, 1 eagle and the remaining 11 holes all pars. The team that finished in the 2nd runner-up spot was made up by Mat McKee (+1), Graham Dewberry (9), Adam Dewberry (7) and Mark Blundell (9). This star-studded team also produced a blemish free round of 10 birdies 8 pars for a gross score of 60 which resulted in a net score of 57 following the application of their 3 handicap. The team that finished in 4th place also completed their 18 holes blemish free, recording 64 gross for a net score of 57.25. They were Sam Herd (18), Paul Donahoo (plus 5) a visitor from Royal Queensland, Craig Dickinson (12) and Jack Blanch (28) who put together a round made up by 8 birdies and 10 pars. Very impressive golf when you consider that the top five teams all completed their 18 holes without a single bogey. The team that finished in 5th place, Glen Roots (22), Scott Brown (5), Steven Camac (7) and Justin Rainbow (10), despite missing out on prize winning position, deserved special recognition for their effort with a gross score of 63 (57.5 nett). Great golf from everyone involved with those top teams. Pro balls to teams with 60.125 nett or better.

Next Saturday we revert back to real golf, with the McLennan Deece Optometrist August Monthly Mug, which of course is played under the stroke format.

Mid-Week Golf

The only mid-week men’s golf held last week was the Tuesday Members/Veterans competition with 88 starters making up the field. The results in both the members event as well as the Veterans division were identical in which Bob Pike (34) cleaned up with a well earned 41 points. Bob is a strong supporter of Grafton Golf not only as a regular player, but also a sponsor of both men and women’s golf at various times. It is great to see Bob on top of the leader board which he would be please with. The 1st runner-up spot was awarded to Chris Wheelahan (12) with 40 from Ray Smith (23) with 39 on a countback from Noel Reeves (29). Pro balls went down to 33 for the members and 32 in the Veteran’s division.

Event Changes

Regular Saturday golfers should be aware of a significant change to their golf programme scheduled for Saturday 12th August. The original Stableford competition is to be replaced by a 2-man Ambrose which will also serve as the qualifier for the NSW Keno 2 man Ambrose series. The cost for those players wanting to qualify for the Keno competition will be $5 per player on top of the regular competition fees. The remaining August events will include the Monthly Mug this coming Saturday, a single Stableford on the 19th, a 4BBB Stroke on 26th which will wind up the August programme. Subject of course to any changes that may occur. The normal mid-week competitions will be in place throughout the month. Those interested in “The Scramble”, that qualifier is scheduled for Sunday 20th August.

On Monday 14th August, Mark Harvison will combine with golf manufacturer Taylormade for a demonstration day highlighting the latest golf equipment. For those golfers wanting to participate just contact the Pro shop on 66425413 to make a appointment in compliance with required protocols.
