Grafton District Golf Club Putts & Pars

Numbers may not have been all that great, however there was no doubting the quality of the field in last Saturdays 27 Hole Championships, hosted and sponsored by Grafton Golf Club.

The combination of two individual past Club Champions, Matt Worthing (4) and Matt McKee (+1) recorded a gross score of 115 for the 27 holes to claim the 2023 championships. They achieved scores of 37, 1, and 37 over the three (3) nines to take the title by just the single shot from the runner up team of Jackson Wright (+1) and Scott Brown (5), who put together 3 nines of 41, 38 and 37 for a total of 116 to just miss on championship glory.

In the handicap scheme of things, the pairing of David Morgan (12) and Tim Bartlett (2) were successful , recording a gross score of 120 which equates to 109.5 nett following the application of their team handicap of 10.5. The two N.T.P. awards went to Ben Randell (11) on the 1st with the 6th taken out by Matt Worthing.

Preceding the Sunday Championships on Saturday was a 18 hole 4BBBstroke sponsored by Clarence Coast Motors with a lower than usual field of 86 starters taking part. Just the single point separated the top three teams in a closely contested competition.

With a score of 61, the combination of David Green (9) and Gary Pym (24) were the winners on the day, recording 32 pts around the front 9 and backed that up with 29 pts around the back nine. David contributed scores on 13 holes with Gary making a strong scoring contribution on the remaining 5 holes to set up 16 win for this popular pairing.

Two teams were next best, just the single point in arrears to the winners with scores of 62. Following the application of the countback process it was the team of Troy McLaren (25) and Andrew O’Brien (20) who were awarded with the 1st runner-up trophy with Greg McCaughey (26) and Billy Darby (10) having to settle for the 2nd runner up trophy for their effort.

The sharp shooters in the N.T.P. component of the competition were Mick Bahag (12) who claimed the ProPin on the 1st (145cm), Greg Harvison (1) made it look easy on the 6th putting his tee shot just 59cm short of the cup. Gerry McMullan (16) was impressive on he 10th, his tee shot just missing the cup finishing 88cm away. Rod Hull (19) proved he was no slouch in the N.T.P. department by putting his tee shot agonizingly close to the cup finishing just 21cm awy. For teams with a score of 64 net or better you have secured yourselves a Proball for the effort.

The season long and final knockout series for the year has now been concluded with the final of the Grafton Glass 2 man Ambrose Knockout now completed. At the conclusion of the series it was the team of Jackson Wright and Brodie Boorman who claimed the bagging rights defeating the worthy pairing of Graham and Peter Tracey 4 & 3 in the final. Congratulations to both teams for making their way to the final, and to Dennis Pye from Grafton Glass for their continued support of this popular series.

Mid Week Competition

In the Tuesday members/veterans competition there were a total of 82 starters in the Members division and 69 in the Veterans side of things. Taking out both competitions was Andrew Connor (17) with 42 pts from Geoff Shepherd (22) who put together a impressive 39 pts to claim the 1st runner up spot in both competitions possibly an appropriate time to remind all players to be mindful of paying more The 2nd runner up in he Members division was Ben Randell (12) who got the cash with 38 pts. In the veterans it was Gary Bendfield (18) who claimed that position with 37 pts. Pro balls going down to 34 pts in the members competition and 33pts for the veterans.

This is possibly an appropriate time to remind all players to be mindful of paying more attention to the proper signing of score cards as last Tuesday , 4 players had to be unfortunately disqualified for this rather lack of attention to detail, with a further 1 achieving the same on Thursday.

The Thursday competition attracted 46 starters with former Grafton Golf Club Member and who now represents the Maclean Golf Club, Denis Runge, (17) was the winner on the day with 39 pts from Noel Allen (22) and Gregory McCaughey (26) with 38 pts. Pro Balls to those on 35 pts or better.
